8:31a Freeport by Maldoror
Oh, oh, just got home and discovered I'm the anime/manga driver for this month. So sorry for the delay, I will catch up. I'm a Naruto and Gundam Wing, multi-pairings, multi-positions, slash addicted, and original series fan. I've been here before so if there is a pairing you really want, drop me a line and I will try find something to your taste.
Fandom: Gundam Wing Pairing: Duo/Wufei (2/5) Length: Giant, Epic, Novel Length + Author on LJ: Mal's Chants Author Website: RaygunWorks ... also called A Little Piece of Gundam Wing Why this must be read:
Taking place 5+ years after the series, Freeport is an incredible story of perceptions. Chang Wufei is sure he is walking into a den of smugglers, thieves, pirates and killers when he convinces his old war ally, Duo Maxwell, to be his guide in Freeport as he searches for an assassin. All he knows of the space colony is rumors/stories but the truth is something else entirely. But when finding his target becomes secondary to just surviving on this colony like no other with a man he only thought he knew - when the laws and politics aren't clear for a Preventer - when Duo Maxwell becomes his only safe constant, watch out universe! Chang Wufei is about to discover what he is really made of.
Freeport is a wonderful scifi action/adventure masquerading as a fanfic. Long, in-depth, and involving, the romance between the characters is almost secondary to the love story of the characters to Freeport. I never quite knew where the author was going to take me, making each chapter a revelation. While this fic reads fast, it is not little so block out a couple days. An added treat, the author is current re-writing it - to repair what 'she' sees as flaws in her writing. So you get 2 views of the same story - both incredible. Even if you don't know the fandom, it is easy to pick up the history you need to make this a very satisfying read.

4:19p When the Lights Go On Again by seanchai and elspethdixon (PG-13)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairings: Steve/Tony, Hank/Jan, Carol/Wanda Length: 183,000 words Authors on LJ: seanchai and elspethdixon Author Website: No website, but you can find more of their fanfiction in various places, such as Tales of Suspense for their Steve/Tony stories, or Elspethdixon's Big Damn Fanfic List and Elspeth1 on FF.N for multi-fandom stuff.
Why this must be read: I've been saving this one for Friday afternoon. The weekend's here, and you're looking for something nice and long to read, yes? Well, have I got a story for you.
Seanchai and Elspethdixon once again demonstrate their talent for long, plotty stories, and pitch-perfect characterization. In this one, a race of aliens has successfully invaded the Earth. The major cities are imprisoned in impenetrable forcefields, and within the New York City forcefield, the Avengers fight a guerrilla war against the alien occupiers.
The authors have done an outstanding job of world-building, creating an original alien race and giving it a believable history and culture. The Argonians have personality, both as a race and as individuals.
They've also done an excellent job of keeping the writing focused, despite its length; the scenes work to move the story forward. The large-ish cast of characters is kept true to canon, but with the addition of little insights that make them more real.
When the Lights Go On Again, Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four | Chapter Five (a) | Chapter Five (b) | Chapter Six (a) | Chapter Six (b) | Chapter Seven | Chapter Eight | Chapter Nine | Chapter Ten | Chapter Eleven | Chapter Twelve | Chapter Thirteen | Chapter Fourteen | Chapter Fifteen | Chapter Sixteen | Chapter Seventeen | Chapter Eighteen | Chapter Nineteen | Chapter Twenty (a) | Chapter Twenty (b) | Chapter Twenty-One
When the Lights Go On Again Extras. This has a link where you can download a .PDF file of the entire story.

12:52p Overload by Pam Bazemore (G)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: none Length: 5983 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: in Cascade Library: http://tslibrary.skeeter63.org/
Why this must be read: This story provides a flash of insight into what it must be like for Jim to experience the barrage of information enhanced senses would assault him with in a moment of crisis. A massive influx of information initially fueled by adrenalin, and then rocked by pain, this story explores the measure of bravery and discipline Jim must employ to perform his job with calm, leveraged heroism.
Under fire from suspects who have crashed their car and fled on foot, Blair calls for backup from his position of safety crouched behind their truck, while Jim, on foot and in pursuit opens his senses to fully alert. It is at this moment that the unexpected shifts, roars to life and explodes around him. While Jim's heightened senses save his life, the consequent sensory overload sweeps him to the very brink of sanity.

10:56a The Hookerverse by fiandyfic (NC-17).
.
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Characters: Practically everyone. Length: Approx. 35,000-40,000 words Author on LJ: fiandyfic Author Website: List of stories at Hell is Where the Heart Is
Why this must be read:
And so it falls to me to rec the Hookerverse... *straps on pith helmet*
darthfi and m31andy are the talented nutters writers behind fiandyfic's Hookerverse, a series of stories that answer the question of what might have happened if Gene’s reaction to Sam’s confronting him about his corruption had been markedly different. What if Gene and Phyllis were pimps as a sideline? What if Sam was blackmailed into working for them?
Their work is not for the faint of heart and you should really pay close attention to the warnings for each story in the series but... While it is seamy and horrific in parts, bringing beloved characters in to what at times is a brutally sharp focus, it will also often have you laughing your arse off, suddenly and without warning, while peering at the screen between your fingers.
So, as the rentboy said to the copper, go and examine the goods.
The Hookerverse master list.

8:07p To Let by amand-r (PG-13)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: Jack/Ianto Length: 11,000 words Author on LJ: amand_r Author Website: Master Fic List Why this must be read: "To Let" is another fantastic story from an outside point of view -- this time through the eyes of Ianto's housemate. I don't know what I love more: the way Amand_r evokes share-housing in all its weirdness, the wonderful sidelong take we get on Jack and Ianto, or the way Ianto's housemate searches out internet gossip on Torchwood. Fortunately, I don't have to pick, because this story has it all. *happysigh*

1:03p Likes Games by Sionnain (PG13)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski/Ray Vecchio Length: One-shot Author on LJ: sionnain Author Website: sionnain_fics Why this must be read: This is the story that made me see how F/K/V could work. It is a hysterically cute one-shot that shows a snippet of life in an established relationship. The story takes place with the boys trapped at home in a snow storm with nothing to do but play a bored game.
It was Sunday, and there was snow. A lot of snow. A fuck-ton of snow, Kowalski had said, when Ray'd asked him how much they'd gotten. Like it was an actual number or measurement they'd use on the news. Good morning, Chicago, we have a record fuck-ton of snow in some areas...
"It's Chicago," Kowalski had muttered, shrugging. "You never know." And there really was a lot of snow, enough to shut down business and schools all over the city, and it would have caused headaches getting to work if Ray and Kowalski hadn't had the day off.
Even Fraser was home, because he didn't work on Sundays anymore ("Is Canada closed on Sundays now?" Kowalski had asked suspiciously when Fraser told them, and Fraser had looked guilty and said something about labor laws, like he felt bad that he didn't have to work seven days a week), and that meant they were all home while the worst blizzard in Chicago's history dumped a rapidly increasing amount of snow outside their apartment.
The nice part was that they were all home for the day, with nothing to do.

11:28a Silk Cut Souvenir, by st_aurafina (PG)
Fandom: HELLBLAZER Pairing: gen Length: 7200 Author on LJ: st_aurafina Author Website: ? Why this must be read: In my overview I mentioned that the annual Yuletide small fandom fic exchange has a Hellblazer presence - this fic is an example of just how amazing it can be.
Chas is definitely one of my favorite characters in the series, and he really shines here, but not in a way that requires him to be anything more than he is; the spotlight is on him in a very realistic way, showing him doing exactly what he would do.
The plot is wonderful, too: a great premise that fits right in with the themes of the comic, awesome twists, a brilliant use of Chekhov's gun. It's very well paced and the voices and characterization are spot on.
Read it, you won't regret it.
( Have a taste... )

8:23p Maker's Mark by posyvanilla (G)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS. Ultimates universe. Pairing: Gen Length: 1,142 words Author on LJ: posyvanilla Author Website: Fic Masterlist Why this must be read: In few words, and with almost no action, posyvanilla draws an intricate picture of Steve Rogers' complex, contradictory and changing attitudes towards Tony Stark. Thoughts, feelings and memories are knit together as Steve oscillates between respect, dislike, sympathy, and the faintest hint of desire. The short story is full of contrasting images, reflecting Steve's internal conflicts: Steve's childhood poverty versus Tony's wealth; Steve's longstanding dislike of alcohol with its "bitter tang", and the day he discovered his mother was a secret drinker, versus Tony's unapologetic alcoholism. Even his unappealing breakfast cereal, "soggy bits of bran flakes," sits in contrast to the beauty of a glass of Tony's whiskey left standing on the kitchen table: "a prism of color arched its back over the rim of the glass, and below, streaks of amber shadowed over the wooden table and the edges of Steve's fingers."
